SKATE ASSIST VOLUNTEERS (SAV) PROGRAM

The Skate Assist Program aims to encourage skaters to be ambassadors for inline skating in our community. It is a community project based on volunteerism. It is skateline's effort to provide free instruction on basic skating techniques for beginners and rules of the road to promote safe skating in our parks. We hope that skaters registered with us would take this opportunity to volunteer and help us promote inline skating as a safe, fun and healthy activity for all. This project is launched with the support and endorsement of the National Parks Board.

Objective
To introduce and encourage skaters to adopt the International Inline Skating Association's rules of the road for safe skating.

Skate Smart, always wear protective gear, helmet, wrist, knee and elbow pads.
Master the basics of moving, stopping and turning. Take lessons. Skate Legal, obey all traffic regulations. When on skates you have the same obligations as any wheeled vehicle. Skate with traffic flow. Skate Alert, control your speed. Watch for road hazards such as water, oil, sand and heavy traffic. Skate Polite, skate on the left and pass on the right. Announce your intentions eg. 'passing on the right!'. Always yield to pedestrians. Be a good ambassador for in-line skating.

National Park Safety Campaign

You Can Enjoy Our Parks by Making it Safer

Skate Assist Volunteers were in the fore front of a campaign to make parks in Singapore safer for users. Together with the National Volunteer Centre and the National Parks Board, the campaign was launched to help educate park users on how they can help make parks safer for all.  Banners, pamphlets, educational programs launched through community groups and schools help to introduce basic part etiquette for users:

  • Keep to designated paths and walkways meant for different users.
  • Observe traffic flow, keep to the left and pass on the right.
  • Be alert for children and learners giving way to pedestrians at zebra crossings, pedestrians to look before crossing.
  • Avoid stopping or changing directions suddenly when on cycling/skating track.
  • Keep a safe distance from the cyclist or skater ahead of you.
  • Move onto grass verge if you need to stop or wait for friends.
  • Wear proper attire appropriate to activity to avoid unnecessary injury.

Through the program, the SAVs have also been appointed Park Watch Volunteers.  The Park Watch program was launched and initiated by the National Parks Board for volunteers to work alongside park rangers as the 'eyes' of the board to give feedback on improvements and activities in the parks that need the park's attention.

SAV Community Projects

Skate Assist Volunteer for Youth Program

The SAVY is a special project adopted by the Skate Assist Volunteers to provide opportunity for Youths in Guidance Program to participate in community work.  It is hoped that teaching the youth to skate and training them to become Skate Assist Volunteers will help instil a sense of responsibility to the community through interaction with good adult models.

Other Community Projects

Safe Skating Clinics, Charity Events, Family Volunteer Day, Car Free Day, SAFRA Runway and the national schools Community Involvement Programs are just some of the many community programs that the Skate Assist Volunteers have been involved in.
